Drawing and sketching has been a part of Murray’s life ever since he could hold a pencil as a pre-schooler. He was born and educated in Otago and spent many years farming the land in the hills of the Catlins back country. In retirement, Murray has moved closer to Dunedin and involvement in the Otago Art Society has become a big part of his life for more than a decade. Murray’s work is inspired primarily by the light and shade of the New Zealand landscape. His love of the rugged natural beauty of the outdoors has drawn him into many untouched areas of the South Island. Recently he has been exploring by helicopter discovering and capturing landscapes inaccessible by road. Murray’s detailed style of painting reflects the serene and powerful mood of lakes, bush and mountains in the ever-changing weather patterns that present a familiar yet unexpected perspective of the landscape.
